Joe Cool releases "Cooley Hi" Mixtape

I've been following this independent's artist work since 2008. Joe Cool, originally from Chicago, IL and also representing the great state of Louisiana, has proven to me over the past 3 years that he has what it takes to have longevity as an MC in this music business. The highly anticipated "Cooley Hi' mixtape, hosted by DJ Philly Nicks, shows me that Hip Hop is not dead in this new generation of Hip Hop. Joe Cool is a true MC, not just a rapper. The difference is a rapper gets on a beat and spits catchy rhymes that satisfies the current state of "hip hop." A true MC owns the track, conveys a message to his/her listeners and has all the lyrical capabilities to compete for longevity in this game. Joe Cool is pure talent proving his skills on this project as a MC and producer, producing 10 out of the 15 tracks. Every year it gets better. This mixtape is the perfect soundtrack with a smooth blend of Hip Hop and R&B. He shows off his production skills sampling R&B greats like Tony, Toni, Tone and John B. I love this project because its sound is relatable on the east coast, the west coast, the midwest and down south. I definitely give "Cooley Hi" 4 out of 5 mics...
Joe Cool, you've got THE JUICE!

Obedience for Success - Coach Anna McCoy

I had the honor and pleasure of having Coach Anna McCoy speak at the "Real Talk for Real Issues" conference this past weekend in Atlanta, GA at the Community Fellowship Christian Center International. I was so impressed I wanted to hear and learn more and went directly to youtube.com! lol... I came across this VERY motivational message entitled "Obedience for Success" and felt compelled to share this good word.....

In this message, she teaches from Deuteronomy 30:11-16 and the 3rd Chapter of Proverbs. In her message she states that in order to have financial success, you must be obedient and love the Lord and obey in every area of your life. "The doorkeepers to your choice is asking yourself, will this bring me life and prosperity or death and destruction." - Coach Anna McCoy

Happy Birthday Aailyah!! 1/16/79 - 8/25/01

Aailyah Dana Haughton is one of the MOST influential artists in my life, still to this day!... I can attribute some of my swagg to her... Her demeanor, to the combat boots that I wear and even her song writing style is all apparent in me... I will always love Aaliyah for being such a kind spirit and her gift of music to my generation.

Just wanted to dedicate a post to celebrate her day of birth... Enjoy some of the rare interviews and my favorite videos of hers that I enjoy watching. Aaliyah is truely a gift from God to the music genre we call R&B!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AALIYAH!!
I Love you, I Miss You.

The Favor Factor

People say I'm a highly motivated, driven and an always positive person.. Some might say I'm even inspiring.. My drive and inspiration to keep going in this industry and not give up on my dreams and goals come from a foundation anchored in God's word.. It also keeps me on an ethical, moral road getting there lol.. Everyone has purpose on earth. Some of our struggles are tougher than others to reach our divine purpose. I was watching Joel Olsteen, and he referred to the gracious hand of God as the "Favor Factor" which he defined as God's favor, his blessing, or almighty God breathing in your direction. I found that quite interesting!

I won't get too preachy, but I felt the need to share this concept of the "Favor Factor"...

Psalm 44:3 says, "you rooted out nations to plant them, crushed peoples to make room for them"... In other words, God's favor cannot be measured, it can't be put on paper. It causes you to overcome. It causes you to succeed past your competitors. With God's favor, you will not be intimidated, you will have an accelerated confidence, and you will have a heightened sense of security.

Because you keep God first place and honor His word, it will cause good breaks to come, and people will naturally be attracted to you and your business. With God's favor, there will be a small voice (you have to pay attention to your inner spirit.. some call it intuition) letting you know certain things that are ciritical to your success. You can have less talent, but with God's favor, you will go further than others in less time and out perform them.

It's not how big or influential someone is, it's God's favor that will give you an advantage or an edge. With that, you cannot be intimidated or fearful. You must carry yourself like you have favor. Think, walk, speak, act, and dress like you have God's favor on your life. Do not be arrogant, but CONFIDENT.

In the book of Nehemiah (in the bible), it talks about how Nehemiah had God's favor to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem when people felt he was unqualified, had no money, and no materials to get the job done. Read Nehemiah 2:8. Nehemiah was only the king's cup-bearer, but you will see that God granted him favor with the king where the king provided him with protection during his travels, money to sustain him during his travels and the materials to get the job done. God's favoring hand was on Nehemiah's life.

When you understand this principle, you will persue what God has placed on your heart, your destiney. Declare the gracious hand of God on your life.. you will be able to cast out all addictions, debt, health problems, relationship problems, unemployment, etc.

Say this prayer: "Father, Thank You, that your gracious hand is upon me. What ever I touch shall prosper and succeed."

Read Psalm 41. The key to this principle, is to thank God during the most difficult times, more than ever. That's when you NEED to declare the favor of God.

The favor of God will keep your enemies from defeating you, but you can't wait until you phsyically see faith to believe in it. You have to believe in your faith first. What causes breakthrough is when you thank God in advance for his favor even when you don't see it. I hope anyone reading this is encouraged to keep going and to keep the faith!

After listening to Olsteen's message, I applied everything he talked about and put my own little spin on it.... I call God's favor in my life my GPS, God's Positioning System also known as The Favor Factor!

Learn HOW to Be Your Own Music Publisher

In this music business, publishing might be the most not understood portion of the business but also the MOST important portion and most times talent might not even know that or have never been exposed to learning about it. When you have the gift of music, sometimes you don't care to learn and having that mindset, you may even be taken advantage of by your management and your label. It's a scary thought, but it definitely happens. Sometimes your sole concern as a creative mind is wanting to just create the music and get exposure in hopes of signing a contract with a label eventually. BUT, if you don't understand what the terms of your contract are, especially about your publishing rights, then you've missed the most important part of the business that could possibly sustain you for the rest of your life. There are some music industry weisels who will take you for everything you earn, if you allow them to. Knowledge of publishing is key to preventing that from happening. As a writer and performer, YOU NEED TO PROTECT YOUR PUBLISHING. That's your copyrights and your licensing. The first step is actually understanding exactly what publishing is and what it can do for you. Publishing is literally your 401k plan in this music business.
Peniece Le Gall, Writer/Publisher Relations Coordinator for SESAC-Atlanta, is the driving force behind the Publishing vs. Publicity Music Publishing Seminars. She gives singers, songwriters, producers, managers, promoters, DJs, etc. a platform to learn about the music business and to also network. Music is 80% business and only 20% talent. That may sound a little crazy, but it is true. Protect your publishing people. It's not that hard to understand. Proper exposure to the subject matter is very important.

You can start by attending the Pub V Pub seminars in Atlanta, GA. We are now planning for the first seminars of 2012. Save the dates, March 1st and March 3rd. Last years seminars were very successful and we are looking to expand and get even bigger this year! By attending Pub v Pub, you will gain knowledge of the business, a platform to network and you will also leave with tangible publishing literature and potential opportunities to exploit your music for placements in mainstream artist projects, tv and film.

Quick Tips on How to Beat the Job Competition

Working in entertainment appeals to some youth as the ideal job situation. I've been blessed with the opportunity to do what I love and have a passion for, which is work in entertainment, but I also like to keep it honest and be realistic with the youth I mentor. You still have to be business savvy to work in entertainment, and there are other job industries out there!

I'm always reading up on ways to enhance my craft which gives me an advantage or a boost against the competition. I also like to put out valuable information for the next person if I feel it could help... Today, I came across an episode of Black Enterprise Business Report on TV1 that could be very helpful to those of you trying to break into the job force....

Orlando Ashford, a Chief HR and Communications Officer spoke with the show about what industries out there are actually hiring qualified candidates and he also gave sound advice on how to break into those job fields...

B.E.B.R. - Where are the jobs today?
Ashford - There are opportunities. You want to focus on what's happening in the world and identify with sectors that relate with that. For example, the growing career fields right now are health care, technology, and all levels of education.

B.E.B.R. - In what areas of the country are these job fields improving?
Ashford - Washington D.C., Boston, New York, and Austin are some.. Depending on what your interests are in the skills that you are developing, I would target that industry sector first, then find the city that corresponds to that industry secor and decide if you might want to live there.

B.E.B.R. - There are a lot of people who are looking for jobs, how do you stand out?
Ashford - You want to tell a story in the resume and tell a story in the interview. Ask yourself, can you draw a clear line of sight in the things that you can and have done and the impact that it has had on the business? If you can't draw that line, then it is diffucult to excite a person to attract you to that company.

B.E.B.R. - How do you make sure that your resume stands out from the rest?
Ashford - Build a tailored and professionally written resume.

B.E.B.R. -  Are there any resources out there that people can use that are free or inexpensive to help them with their job search?
Ashford - I always like to refer people to TheLadders.com. One of the things that they give as a part of their subscription is a resume critique. They will take your resume and give you a detailed critique of things that are working and not working with your resume. Then you have the choice to take your resume and re-write it yourself or pay to have it professionally written.

Further in the show, Lauren Milen Baez, Founder and CEO of Luxury Market Branding gave quick tips on how to brand yourself in today's market:

1. Know what makes your brand unique. Be able to tell your brand's story in a memorable way. First impressions are everything.
2. Be in control of your image. In today's market, your public footprint is readily accesible and often times deamed extremely realiable.
3. Understand your market and what they find relevant. You have to be able to put yourself in their shoes and think like them to be able to reach them and interest them.
4. Know your competition even better. Often times you can find ways to capitalize on their successes and find ways to learn from their failures.
